"Design Your Summer Drink"
Workshop
On 23 July,2020 Thursday @ Don Bosco, Amsterdam
Great experience for hosting this workshop, and here are a few notes, recaps and a bit of reflection (why not hah).
A.Depicting food from primitive shapes
The notes on the rights indicate that organic food can be observed into basic geometries like square and triangles.
1. To level it up, one trick is to add thickness.
2. Then, pretending a light source would indicate the items are placed somewhere, e.g. Table. So adding drop shadows helps viewers understanding the placing and interactions of each object.
3. Since we usually see food from above (60 or 45 degree), it would be also nice to show a bit of the top side. Picking a familiar height and angle would surely help the audience get which ingredient or dishes are presented there.
B. The 30second warm-up
After the introduction of how to construct ingredients from simple shapes, it's time to give it a try.
1. Fold a paper into 9 parts (6, 12, or 16 parts works as well). Each box constraints a canvas or each ingredient.
2. Think about or ask your roommate to challenge you with some food or ingredients (such as Fruit, condiment, breads, drink, etc.) .Really to draw with you intuitions and keep it under 30sec for each box.
3. Here are some demos: Strawberry, broccoli, butter, milk, tea, avocado, croissant, garlic, egg, chocolate, chili pepper....
4. Honorable reference. After the exercise, you could give it a review and even reference the emojis 😊 in your phone for a more publically accepted presentation.
C. To construct a Summer drink
For the second half of the hour, we aimed for composing and designing the summer drink.
1. Just to think about the subject, whether it is a refreshing mojito, iced cold-brewed coffee or some other spontaneous magic mix.
2. Use pencils to draft the main subject (usually a cylinder) and the ingredients. Think about the composition (placement of the objects, the tilting angle)
3. Be bold and outlined with a pen and markers. Mind the line weight! 😎
4. Don't forget to name your drink.
(E.g. Triple Awesome Icecream)
It was a cool experience to give an on-site workshop.
One reflection was that the second part moved too fast.
What instructions really needed are the demo of constructing a cylinder with the thickness
and how to depict the glass-like vessels.
Some step by step explainer cards can be prepared next time~
Another thought is regarding the Styles, how to encourage more styles of food sketching for myself as well as for the participants.
Cheers, 🍹
