Background

Chen-yan is a vegan meal shop providing dining and catering services. It is a family-owned small business and has built up its reputations around the neighborhood.

The client has specified that there is neither need nor budget for rebranding and e-commerce, but it is necessary to upgrade the website for a clearer content browsing.

Design goal

The old (current) website was made in Dreamweaver coded by the client.

Both navigations and aesthetics can be improved so that the visitors can have better browsing experiences.

By aligning the client’s demands, the major changes include:

  • Category change. Condensing the categories appeared site menu.

  • A compound home page enables visitors to have a quick overview of the restaurant background.

  • Dedicate an area for highlights (new or important contents).

Graphic guidelines

Most visitors are returning customers and dine here on regular basis.

Based on the testimony (Persona), the keywords are small, honest and family business, so that the customers feel a personal connection from the comfort food as well as the restaurant.

Among tens of vegan restaurants located in Taipei, these values should be preserved and even emphasized through the design.  The chosen fonts and colors were also compatible with the messages.

Visual modifications

Visual modifications

Due to the limited budget, the visuals were majorly adapted and modified from the old version. This nevertheless preserved some authentic characteristics from the restaurant itself.

These improvements include:

  • Fix distortion and retouch photos for a more consistent outcome.

  • Curate photos and modify them for highlighting content.

  • Use light illustrations to aid story-telling.

Reflection

Reflection & More

This project was approached via a friend from my bachelor study, with a request of upgrading the website of a meal shop, run by her family. I have been learning UIUX skills and theories, but at the meantime seeking real-life cases to execute them.

The project was intentionally treated as a formal case, therefore all the needs and budget were well discussed. From Briefing to Contract, and from Wireframe approval to the Content revision stage, I tried to experience as a potential interaction designer leading a project, and actively reflect on my workflow as well as the skillset.
